Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria, the new WTO Director-General

The Network of Caribbean Chambers of Commerce commends the historic appointment of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the new WTO Director-General of the World Trade Organisation. The former finance minister of Nigeria is the first woman and the first African citizen to ever lead the WTO.

Here are some facts on Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria:

-          Born in Nigeria, Okonjo-Iweala graduated from Harvard University in 1976 and then earned a PhD from MIT.

-          She spent 25 years at the World Bank where she was the first female to run for presidency.

-          She was the first woman to became minister of finance of Nigeria.

As the new WTO Director-General, Okonjo-Iweala will focus on addressing the economic and health consequences brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
